IBM Maximo has been a leading enterprise asset management solution in the industry for four decades. Now, with the introduction of the IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS), organizations have access to a modern and robust asset management solution. MAS offers a better user experience, faster integration, AI analytics, and various cloud deployment options.

IBM MAS is an integrated application suite built on Red Hat OpenShift, providing support for hybrid and on-premises deployments. It utilizes artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and analytics to optimize equipment performance, extend asset lifecycles, and reduce operational downtime and costs.

For customers currently using IBM Maximo, the transition to IBM MAS will be required when Maximo 7.x reaches its end of life. To assist with this transition, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has partnered with IBM and Red Hat to develop a reference architecture called IBM MAS on Red Hat OpenShift Service for AWS (ROSA).

In this article, we will explore the recommended options for running IBM MAS on AWS and discuss the architecture and benefits of each option. We will cover MAS SaaS on AWS (powered by ROSA), MAS Dedicated on AWS (powered by ROSA), and customer-hosted MAS on ROSA.

Why ROSA for Maximo in AWS?

Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) is a fully managed application platform that simplifies deploying applications and offloads cluster lifecycle management to Red Hat and AWS. ROSA is native in the AWS console and integrates with other commonly used AWS services. It provides a managed Red Hat OpenShift Cluster, making it an ideal configuration for IBM MAS.

ROSA eliminates the need for customers to create, manage, and maintain their own Red Hat OpenShift clusters for IBM MAS. This allows organizations to focus on delivering business value instead of managing the underlying platform.

1. IBM MAS SaaS on AWS (Powered by ROSA)

IBM MAS SaaS on AWS offers organizations the convenience of a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model managed by IBM. It eliminates the need for managing hardware and infrastructure independently, providing access to the software and its functionalities through browser-based solutions.

The advantages of MAS SaaS on AWS include fully managed scalability, high availability, fault-tolerance, and easy access to the latest features through predefined updates. However, customization and flexibility may be limited compared to other options.

2. IBM MAS Dedicated on AWS (Powered by ROSA)

The MAS Dedicated on AWS option provides organizations with a tailored MAS experience within AWS. MAS is hosted on dedicated infrastructure exclusively reserved for a single organization, ensuring optimal performance and security managed by IBM. This option offers increased control over infrastructure, updates, and an upgrade schedule.

While MAS Dedicated on AWS provides enhanced control and isolation, customizations are limited compared to other options. There are also additional infrastructure costs associated with this option.

3. IBM MAS on Customer-hosted ROSA

The customer-hosted ROSA option allows organizations to host IBM MAS in their own virtual private cloud (VPC) with ROSA. This option provides full control over the infrastructure and enables greater customization and flexibility. Organizations can leverage existing cloud security and governance policies and have consolidated charges in the unified AWS bill.

However, the customer-hosted ROSA option entails separate purchases of ROSA and IBM MAS, adding to the financial costs. There is also the added cost of operational overhead for configuration and management of the IBM MAS application on ROSA.

Each deployment option for IBM MAS offers distinct advantages and limitations. Organizations should carefully assess their specific business needs and requirements to make an informed decision. IBM MAS SaaS on AWS offers convenience and managed scalability, MAS Dedicated on AWS provides enhanced control and isolation, and customer-hosted ROSA grants full customization and flexibility. By understanding the strengths and limitations of each option, organizations can choose the deployment option that aligns with their business objectives.
